6 fun things to do in Port Sunlight this summer

Summer is just around the corner, so you might be wondering what you can do next to fill the (hopefully) sunny days.

As always, there will be plenty to do in the Liverpool City Region and if you want to plan ahead, there are some events and activities at Port Sunlight that you may want to add to your diary – or book now to enjoy. anticipation as well.

Port Sunlight is one of the best surviving workers’ villages in the world and is right on the city’s doorstep. A 20-minute drive or train journey from central Liverpool will take you across the Mersey to discover this unique village full of stunning architecture, amazing parks and gardens and great cultural days out that will create lots of memories for you and your family .

Port Sunlight Village Trust’s slogan is ‘beautiful, unique and a perfect day’ and looking at this little lot that is absolutely perfect!

1. An unmissable photography exhibition

For the first time, the British Association of Press Photographers is bringing its annual ‘Assignments’ exhibition to the Wirral, celebrating the best press photographs of the past year. The exhibition takes place in Bridge Cottage – one of Port Sunlight’s most distinctive houses, which is not usually open to the public – and, open from Saturday 8 June to Sunday 1 September, is pay-what-you-want to visit.

And while we’re at it, you could visit again from September when Bridge Cottage will be hosting another photography exhibition, this time by Francesco Mellina, with eye-catching images capturing Liverpool’s club and music scene in the late 70s and the beginning of the 70s. ’80, including the iconic band Dead or Alive and the late lead singer and songwriter Pete Burns, who grew up in Port Sunlight.

2. Enjoy the longest rose garden in the Northwest

The rose garden that runs along the Diamond, Port Sunlight’s central avenue, is one of the longest in the Northwest, filled with thousands of roses of various varieties. It’s the perfect backdrop for a selfie, or you can simply enjoy their scent as you stroll. Once you’re done, you can explore the rest of Port Sunlight’s acres of colorful parks and gardens.

3. Inspirational walking tours

Every Wednesday-Sunday at 11.30am a fascinating 90 minute walking tour takes you on an adventure to discover the history and stories that make Port Sunlight so special. You can peel back the layers of how and why the village was built, explore the beautiful architecture and hear stories of village life past and present. You can book online or pay on the day, although advance booking is recommended as places are limited. Tours depart from and end at Port Sunlight Museum.

4. An outdoor theater show to remember

We all love a bit of Shakespeare and how nice to watch it outdoors in the prettiest village park? Folksy Theater is staging a performance of As You Like It, the bard’s great comedy about life, love, betrayal and faith, on Wednesday 14 August. Get ready for live music, bold characters, audience interaction and lots of laughs – and maybe grab a picnic to enjoy while watching this fun-filled production. Tickets are £15 for adults and £12 for children.

5. A road race

Every year, thousands of runners take part in the Road Race, one of the UK’s most scenic running events. In 2024, BTR Liverpool are inviting people to take part on Sunday 9th June and there is a 5k or 10k route… or you can even double up to run the 15k! Families can also participate in a 1k fun run that day. Register here for the Unilever sponsored road race.

6. A summer adventure trail

Every day in the summer, families can go on a self-guided activity trail around the picturesque village with Bertie Fluturele. Pick up a £2 trail pack from the Port Sunlight Museum (open Wednesday to Sunday) and don’t worry about booking in advance as, with no limited numbers, a perfect family day out is guaranteed.
