ESPN’s College Day in College Station

COLLEGE STATION — The Mike Elko era at Texas A&M will begin with plenty of fanfare to match the circumstances.

ESPN’s College GameDay will be at Kyle Field for the Aggies’ Aug. 31 opener against Notre Dame and Elko’s first game as A&M’s coach. ABC-TV will then televise the game with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff from Kyle.

Elko was Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator under then-Irish coach Brian Kelly before serving as the Aggies’ defensive coordinator for four seasons (2018-21) under then-A&M coach Jimbo Fisher, who was fired last November for failing to compete for the Southeastern Conference. titles.

A&M unraveled over the last two seasons under Fisher in compiling a 12-13 record with Elko as Duke’s head coach (the Blue Devils were 16-9 over the same span).

“We are extremely excited that ESPN’s College GameDay, as well as ABC’s prime-time game, will feature Texas A&M and coach Mike Elko,” said new A&M athletics director Trev Alberts. “Our game against Notre Dame will be a great way to open our regular season.”

This will mark A&M’s 10th appearance as part of a College GameDay broadcast, including its seventh as host. Recently retired Alabama coach Nick Saban is scheduled to be part of the 8-11 a.m. presentation that morning. The ABC team includes Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Holly Rowe.
