Liverpool legend believes Darwin Nunez will benefit MORE from Arne Slot’s arrival

It promises to be a summer of renewal at Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp stepping down as manager after nine years and Arne Slot coming in to replace him as head coach.

There is plenty of movement behind the scenes, with a host of Klopp’s key staff leaving and Richard Hughes coming on board as sporting director.

The Reds’ season is heading for a disappointing end and after Klopp’s final game in charge – against Wolves at Anfield on Sunday – it will be time to take stock and look to the future.

The form of many of Liverpool’s players dipped towards the end of the season, particularly up front where the forwards struggled in front of goal.

Apart from Cody Gakpo, who finishes this term in decent form, Liverpool’s front line has not been firing on all cylinders of late.

Mohamed Salah has been repeatedly criticized for his results, while question marks remain over the future of Colombian winger Luis Diaz amid indifferent displays.

Jurgen Klopp appears to have lost faith in Darwin Nunez in recent games as well, starting four of his last five Premier League games on the bench.

Things came to a head following missed chances against Tottenham last week, leading to an Instagram deletion spree.

The Uruguayan hitman has been linked with a move to Barcelona in recent weeks, although there remains uncertainty as to whether or not the Catalans can deliver on such an expensive move.

However, Darwin is one of the performers who could MOST benefit from a change of manager if he stays for the squad’s regeneration, according to a Liverpool great.

Steve Nicol won four top-flight titles during his time at Anfield, adding three FA Cups as well as the European Cup.

He made almost 500 appearances for Liverpool over 13 seasons, winning the FWA Footballer of the Year award in 1989.

The former defender believes that Klopp’s exit aligned with Slot’s arrival will mean a fresh start for the 24-year-old, who could benefit from the Dutch coach’s new ideas.

Nicol thinks Darwin can impress Slot

“It’s probably going to be best for someone like Darwin Nunez because it’s a fresh start,” Nicol told ESPN.

“There might be a small change in the way Liverpool play that can change a lot of things on the pitch.

“He’s the one who will probably benefit as much as anyone from the change of manager because he’ll come into that first training session thinking: ‘Okay, I can impress this guy and if I can impress him on this guy what happened in the last couple. years becomes insignificant’.

“The one thing I can guarantee you is that Darwin Nunez, from the first day they come back, will do everything and more to impress Arne Slot because it’s a new start for him.”
