Daniel Pudil says two out-of-contract Sheffield Wednesday players “deserve” to stay

Former Sheffield Wednesday player Daniel Pudil has picked out two Owls contract players he believes “deserve” to stay.

Sheffield Wednesday have a number of players out of contract in the summer, including some big first team players.

Josh Windass is among them and the striker recently revealed that his agent is in talks with Sheffield Wednesday but that he and many of his team-mates could wait until Danny Rohl’s future is finalised.

It has been reported that Rohl has held positive talks with boss Dejphon Chansiri over his future at the club, with talks of a potential new contract for the German coach.

Elsewhere, after the 2-0 win against Sunderland on the final day of the season, Barry Bannan all but confirmed he is at the club for at least another year.

Daniel Pudil wants new contracts for Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer

Former Wednesday defender Pudil recently played in a Sheffield Wednesday charity match and gave his thoughts on the contract situation at Hillsborough.

Speaking to The Star, Pudil said: “I was talking to Gary Hooper about it, that Baz (Bannan) has been here for almost 10 years now – because he came in at the same time as us in 2015.

“And obviously Liam (Palmer) has been brought up from the academy. Those players deserve, for me, a new contract and I’d really like to see them in a Sheffield Wednesday shirt again.”

Pudil added: “What they’ve done for the club, they’ve been there in good times and bad, so I think they deserve to be here, and with Baz and Liam I know them very well – they’re not just good players, they’re good characters too .”

Change is needed at Sheffield Wednesday, but one thing must remain

Sheffield Wednesday are undoubtedly heading for a huge summer of change in terms of their playing squad.

While changes are expected in terms of facilities and Rohl’s contract and so on, there will be mass changes in the side if Rohl stays, the first team to need a change after years of troubleshooting and the players coming and walking.

But one thing remained the same needs to remain the same; having players like Bannan and Palmer in the squad who are not only quality players but very much ‘Sheffield Wednesday players’.

As Pudil suggests, both players love the club and will always give it their all. They will help ensure that new players coming in know exactly what the club is about and what it needs to be loved by the supporters.

No matter how much a team is in transition, there always needs to be that sense of stability, and Sheffield Wednesday can maintain theirs by also keeping the likes of Bannan, Palmer and Windass.

There are others who may enter the conversation, but those three appear to be key contracts for the club to resolve sooner rather than later.
